4. The way from Africa to Europe
Organisation / Progress (by the example of Niger > Libya ( > Europe ) )
- beginning at a bus-stop in Agadez, in the middle of Niger at the border to the Ténéré desert
- trading with refugees is absolutely legal in Niger (there are even booming “tourist offices” for migrants)
- migrant-streams from most of the west African countries meet there
- up to 100 migrants and more get on the trucks
- the police build checkpoints along the route on which each migrant has to pay 15 to 30€ per checkpoint
- after five days, they arrive at Dirkou, Libya
- the number of migrants who are allowed to stay depends on the actual situation in Libya
- “tolerated illegality” allows the Libyan state to repulse the migration streams
- when the migrants reached Libya, there are three possibilities:
- with enough money (about 1.700€), migrants can get into a unreliable boat together with 70 other migrants and than can hope to reach Europe
- with too much other migrants, they get send back to Niger
- with too much black skin colour, they get mistreated or even killed
Vehicles
- trucks with more than 100 migrants each
- Toyota Pickups with about 25 to 30 migrants each (they are able to go around border controls)
